St. Anthony of Padua Chapter

International Ecclesia Dei Association

September 1994

This month marks the 1 year anniversary of the start of the St. Anthony
of Padua Chapter of the International Ecclesia Dei Association. It was
begun in 1993 to promote our Catholic Heritage (especially the Traditional
Latin Mass, wherever it may be celebrated with approval of the Bishop) and
to put into action the Spiritual Works of Mercy.

THOMAS DROLESKEY in Newtown Square

by Beth Kephart

Addressing a well-receptive audience, Dr. Thomas A. Droleskey spoke on the topic: "Catholic Action: Spiritual, Social and Political" on July 13 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Newtown Square.

The intercession was given by Father Daniel Kehoe, pastor emeritus of Holy Spirit parish in Sharon Hill.

Thomas Droleskey is a regular columnist in "The Wanderer" and a professor of political science at C.W.Post Center, Long Island University.

Dr. Droleskey provided his listeners with an informative and entertaining evening with his lecture and question and answer session. In speaking about the spiritual, social and political aspects of Catholic action, he emphasized the importance of Eucharistic piety, saying that this and Marian devotion are greatly needed. Dr. Droleskey reminded everyone that Catholics have a right to participate in civic life. He is looking for grass-roots interest in forming a Catholic political party and said that he would like to come back to talk about this.

Thanks go to all who helped make the night successful, especially to Frank and Sue Castaldi for their donation of the hall.

ABOUT THE CHAPTER

The St. Anthony of Padua Chapter of the International Ecclesia Dei Association invites the participation of Catholics loyal to the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church, of the Philadelphia area, who wish to unite with other faithful Catholics in putting into action the Spiritual Works of Mercy.

Our activities - spiritual, social, informative - strive to prudently maintain and promote our rich Catholic Heritage and to offer a "visible bond to those Catholics within the Church" who are attached to "previous disciplinary and liturgical forms of the Latin tradition" (Ecclesia Dei.n.5c).

We will work and pray always with the assurance of Our Lord's promise: "Behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world" (Matt. 28:20).

"ECCLESIA DEI"
Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, has great pastoral concern and compassion for all the faithful. Because of his concern, in October 1984, he granted permission for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass to be offered again in Latin with approval of the local bishop.
In a more recent Apostolic Letter, Ecclesia Dei (July 2, 1988), his Holiness expanded these earlier directives, calling for their "wide and generous application."
Ecclesia Dei is a concise Apostolic Letter of 1300 words. The Letter was issued Motu Proprio, that is, on the personal initiative and authority of the Holy Father himself. Pertinent excerpts of Ecclesia Dei are as follows:
"To all Catholic faithful who feel attached to some previous liturgical and disciplinary forms of the Latin tradition, I wish to manifest my will to facilitate their ecclesial communion by means of the necessary measures to guarantee respect for their rightful aspirations. In this matter I ask support of the Bishops and of all those engaged in the pastoral ministry of the Church.
"By virtue of my Apostolic Authority I Decree...respect must everywhere be shown for the feelings of those who are attached to the Latin liturgical tradition, by a wide and generous application of the directives already issued some time ago by the Apostolic See, for the use of the Roman Missal...of 1962."
