he Tridentine Mass has been celebrated every Sunday at St. Francis of Assisi Church since July 7, 1996. The St. Anthony of Padua Chapter, International Ecclesia Dei Association has been centered on that Mass, since there is a meeting room available after that Mass every week downstairs. Many of the people who go to the 1:15 Mass get together in the Parish Meeting Room for refreshments and socializing. The Indult Mass originally began in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on December 3, 1989 (over 10 years ago!) at St. John’s downtown. There was an effort over the past year to try and get a third indult Mass in the diocese, in Chester County, to serve those in the western edge of the archdiocese. But it turned out the church that had been requested was not acceptable. Since Father Ettorre has been away, Father Finn has been saying Mass just about every Sunday. A couple of times so far this year, Father Kehoe has come to Norristown to say the Mass here! Father Kehoe is normally one of the rotation of priests who say the Mass at Our Lady of Consolation in Philadelphia. He also said the Mass almost every time at St. Louis in Yeadon when the Mass used to be there once a month a few years ago. He is one of the priests who have been saying the Tridentine Mass since it first started in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia at St. John’s downtown. We are in need of more men or boys to volunteer to serve the Mass on Sundays! No prior experience is needed. Anyone who is interested in becoming an altar boy at the Tridentine Mass in Norristown may speak to one of the altar boys or join us downstairs after Mass and mention an interest. |

This year there have been very few events. We could use some fresh, new leadership in the organization, to plan more events and trips! On April 2, we’re having Dr. Droleskey here, who will be going a talk on the topic of Evolution. The only other event this year was a very small Christmas party downstairs after the Mass in Norristown on December 26. |
Among the greatest of the Church’s artistic treasures is its vast repertory of sacred polyphonic choral music. Sacred polyphony. which reached its height in the sixteenth century, stands alongside Gregorian chant as a form of music most suited to the Divine Liturgy. However, even though it is specifically mentioned in both Sacrosanctum Concilium VI.116; 1963) and Musicam Sacram (Preface; 1967), sacred polyphony is seldom heard during Mass today. In Norristown, We are fortunate to have a choir dedicated to both chant and polyphony. The polyphony choir, which sings at Mass once every six to eight weeks. keeps alive the polyphonic tradition by singing masterworks of such composers as Palestrina, Byrd, Victoria, Hassler, Viadana, and Anerio. The core of the music sung by the polyphony choir is a setting of the Ordinary of the Mass. In addition, the choir chants some of the Mass Propers and sings polyphonic motets during the Offertory, Communion, and the Recession. The acoustics in St. Francis of Assisi church rival those of the great cathedrals of Europe and allow the voices to blend with transcendent beauty. Members of the polyphony choir include Beverly Schmidt, Mindy Hinkel, Walton Carson, George McCarty-North, Nicholas Beck, and Brian Middleton. The choir is directed by Dr. Gregory Golm. |

Our youngest altar boy, Matt Cavoto On March 5 of this year, our first teenage altar boy started serving the Mass. He already serves the Mass and says the Latin prayers as well as the old folks who have been serving the Mass there. He is 18 years old and a senior at Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic High School. His interests are music and baseball. He is a member of the concert band and choir at his school and is also in the All Catholic Chorus which includes students from all over the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He plans to major in piano performance and church music in college but as of yet has not decided to which college he will go. |
