he Tridentine Mass has been celebrated every Sunday at St. Francis of Assisi Church since July 7, 1996. The St. Anthony of Padua Chapter, International Ecclesia Dei Association has been centered on that Mass, since there is a meeting room available after that Mass every week downstairs. Many of the people who go to the 1:15 Mass get together in the Parish Meeting Room for refreshments and socializing, followed by singing practice. The meeting room is down the stairs next to the sacristy. People are also invited to bring in snacks (cookies, cakes, donuts, whatever) to share. Soda can be brought and put it in the refrigerator downstairs before Mass. It's also a good idea to come down after the Mass because sometimes announcements and decisions made even when it's not a formal meeting.
Father Finn (one of the priests who says the Mass in Norristown) was given a Liber Usualis (the book of Gregorian chants) for his birthday. Also, $65 was raised for a needy family, for Christmas dinner and gifts for the children.
After about 6 months of practicing the Gregorian Chant, on July 27 the chants were done at the Mass for the first time (Kyrie, Sanctus, Agnus Dei). We started with Mass VIII, De Angelis, because those are some of the easiest chants, and because they can be found in the back of the red Mass books available at every Mass. continued on page 2

New Document from the Vatican
ON CERTAIN QUESTIONS ON COLLABORATION This document is available from the official web site of the Vatican. http://www.vatican.va/phome_en.html A few passages from this document: "It is unlawful for the non-ordained faithful to assume titles such as 'pastor', 'chaplain', 'coordinator', 'moderator' or other such similar titles which can confuse their role and that of the Pastor, who is always a Bishop or Priest." "Diocesan and parochial Pastoral Councils and Parochial Finance Councils, of which non-ordained faithful are members, enjoy a consultative vote only and cannot in any way become deliberative structures." "To promote the proper identity (of various roles) in this area, those abuses which are contrary to the provisions of canon 907 are to be eradicated. In eucharistic celebrations deacons and non-ordained members of the faithful may not pronounce prayers e.g. especially the eucharistic prayer, with its concluding doxology or any other parts of the liturgy reserved to the celebrant priest. Neither may deacons or non-ordained members of the faithful use gestures or actions which are proper to the same priest celebrant." "To avoid creating confusion, certain practices are to be avoided and eliminated where such have emerged in particular Churches: ... the habitual use of extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion at Mass thus arbitrarily extending the concept of 'a great number of the faithful'."

After spending about a month practicing them downstairs after refreshments after Mass, we started doing the chants for Mass XVII, the Mass for the Sundays of Advent and Lent, on the first Sunday of Advent. After Christmas, we will return to Mass VIII, and then begin learning Mass XI (Orbis factor) next. Everyone who can is always welcome to join in singing the Chants at Mass! The chants for Mass VIII are in the red books, and the chants for other Masses will be available on sheets of paper. We do not use any instrumental accompaniment for the chants during Mass. Gregorian Chant was originally always done a cappella.
