A Book of Dark and Light Magic

by Spenser Horwedel

Tom is a 14 year old youth that has snow white hair and grey eyes. The school that Tom goes to is not really a school; it does not have a teacher for teaching. So with no rules there are always fights.

Tom does not like to fight and has a good hiding place until Jack brings his bloodhound to "school". And with that Tom and Jack are in a fighting circle and they both have sticks. Tom is scared and Jack is big. Jack comes at Tom with good speed for a big guy and Tom feels a sharp pain on his head, Then it doesn't hurt any more.

Tom feels this amazing power surge through his body. He puts that power in his arms. "Are his hands glowing?" asks a spectator. As he says this Tom raises his arms. Orange energy blasts from his hands and knocks both Tom and Jack out of the circle. The kids look at Tom for 5 seconds but after 7 he runs for Yu-key Forest and gets to it's borders.

After he passed the borders of Yu-key Forest he started to cry because he didn't have a dad to help him get thru stuff like this. One hour passed and Tom was getting hungry. It didn't feel right to go back home in his muddy state. His thoughts wandered to Bob the silly old man who sells stuff he "finds on the ground".

Tom went back to town in a sneaky manner, and literally tripped over Bob's brown heap. "Was gon on?" Asked a sleepy Bob. "Sorry Bob I didn't mean to step on you." Tom replied, Bob looked up at Tom and laughed. "What's so funny?" Tom wanted to know. "I was jus goin ta look fer you." Bob wheezed. "Why." Tom Asked, very thoughtful at this point. "I wan you ta meet som gents I met." Bob said with a little hesitation. Bob lead the way to a beat up shack that looked like you couldn't live in it, as Bob opened the door Tom sensed something bad, really bad.

"Hello Tom Vonway son of Barok Han Vonway." A smooth voice said menacingly. "Who are you?" Asked Tom hoping he sounded braver than he felt. "I'm the Kings general of the royal army, and your coming with me." Tom replied "Yeah right, I don't think so." Some soldiers with crossbows step out of the shadows. "I think you don't have a choice." Wers my mony fer da kid?" Bob greedily asked, holding his hands out.

"Here you go." The general said throwing the big bag of gold at the street rat. "Hehehe." The old man cackled, but as Bob ran thru the door a crossbow blot hit him in the back. "Not Bob!" Tom cringed, but he didn't feel so bad for the old guy had sold him out.

Tom walked on the muddy road because it had started to rain. The past 3 hours had been worse though he still hadn't gotten any food and he wasn't allowed to say good bye to his Mom. As the squad went through a patch of wood, they heard a noise of a snapping twig and the general said "draw your swords." Tom's brain was racing as he didn't have anything to protect himself and he was tied up. But as the last man drew his sword, an arrow went through his head. Tom was right behind the man and was sprayed with blood drops. Just then five more arrows came, but only two hit and one killed. Elves jumped from the bushes and came down with no mercy, within one minute more then half the squad was wiped out but all Tom could do was hit the ground and watch. When it was all over Tom tried to look dead but the elves found him anyway. "Where do you hail from?" asked the elf that looked, like he was in charge. "Edgeville," whimpered Tom. "Stop whimpering, baby," said a new elf. "Stop being mean Na-koom…it was most likely his first battle," the head elf growled. "Well why don't you ask him, Dad," said the elf called Na-koom. "I've never been in a battle in my life, well besides with bullies," Tom said before there was a fight. "Well no matter, we have a short way to go," the boss elf said. "What's your name?" Tom asked the boss elf. "It's Bossaba, Tom," said Bossaba. "How do you know my name?" Tom asked. "We've been watching you. Now let's move men," Bossaba commanded.

They marched, walked, ran, jogged and Tom fell ten times before they camped. The next day Tom found some food, a pack with food, a cloak with small camouflage and a nice fighting dagger; almost a short sword but not quite.

So after breakfast they started to hike again till they all got to the main camp, well the whole camp stopped and stared at Tom the only human, well there were whispers and pointing till the small squad reached the middle of the camp was the biggest tent in the camp, Tom stepped from foot to foot and felt real nerve, then the flap of the tent opened and out came the elf king himself. "Tom," said the Elf King, and with the most surprise of everyone, he bowed to Tom, a mere human.

The next day Tom got up real early and with dagger in hand took a walk along Candy River. Last night had been chaotic. First, the Elf King held a feast in Tom's honor in which afterward the King explained that Tom could be the end of the long and miserable war. As Tom walked something made him look up and he saw a white book on the bank of the river. At first he thought it was nothing and looked down again, but as he did he felt himself walking to the river bank and pick it up, all against his will. As he picked it up a small blast went through his body and orange sparks went from the book to Tom.

Tom heard a rustling in the bushes and five soldiers came out of nowhere followed by about a whole army. Tom did the first thing he thought of; he tucked the book under his arm and ran. As he ran, the soldiers chased him. At first he didn't know what to do. As he was thinking and running, he drew his dagger and threw it at the soldiers killing one of one hundred. The next thing he thought of was to alert the camp so he started yelling. "We're under attack! We're under attack! Prepare for battle."

All at once, the camp bustled and elves came out in their sleepwear, some with armor and some without, but all with weapons. As Tom turned to start running toward his tent, he ran into Na-koom. Na-koom said, "What happened to your dagger and where are they coming from?" Tom replied, "I threw my dagger and killed one and they're coming from that direction," and he pointed. As he said this, the tent they were hiding behind burst into flame and both Tom and Na-koom hit the ground. Na-koom yelled, "Go to your tent and get on some armor. You'll need it."

"What about you," asked Tom? "I'll be okay. I'm heading toward the griffins," Na-koom replied with a smirk. With the thought of Na-koom riding a griffin, Tom headed toward his tent and slipped into some chain mail. When he came out of his tent, a sword flew through a flaming tent. The tip was still blazing hot when he pulled it from the ground.

Five soldiers came at Tom. Tom blasted one with orange sparks and while the other four were puzzling about how that happened he struck with the blazing tipped sword. It hit three of them but one of them blocked it with his shield. Tom, thinking fast, stabbed at the shield with the tip still fiery red. The heat melted a whole through the shield and impaled the man behind it.

After that, Tom decided to look for Na-koom. He barely took one step and with a gust of wind out of the sky comes Na-koom on a forget-me-not blue griffin. Tom unstraps a sheath from one of the soldiers on the ground and puts Firetip in the black sheath. Tom jumps onto the griffin and both Tom and Na-koom ride into the skies.

Na-koom handed Tom a cross-bow and said "take this and shoot down and the soldiers," Tom reaches for and grabs it. As they start to go over the enemy, heavy tipped arrows whiz past the blue griffin, Na-koom steers the griffin expertly thru the storm of arrows.

"What are you waiting for, fire at will!" Na-koom shouts over the wind, Tom snaps out of his dazed state and starts to fire the bolts at the unsuspecting soldiers, but Tom felt like the cross-bow was not doing as good as magic could.

So Tom held the cross-bow with one hand and shot a beam of magic down at the soldiers, but as the beam was about midway a black beam answered back. The two beams hit and an explosion of a crimson color lit up the slowly brightening sky. Na-koom steered away from the explosion and back towards camp but not before seeing reinforcements for the soldiers and King Han leading the way.

As they were landing the griffin, Bossaba was fighting about 15 soldiers, by him self! Right as the griffin landed Na-koom jumped off and ran for his dad, "Dad!" Na-koom yelled, he drew his sword, but as Na-koom ran, Bossaba was pinned and slain. Na-koom's shoulders shook but he kept running at the solders ran at him but Na-koom slew them all.

Na-koom knelt down as his father took his last breath.

Tom stood idly and didn't know what to do. With a huge boom, the mass of the enemy marched right at Tom and Na-koom, with King Han leading the way. The rest of the elves charged with all they had left. The elf king lead the way with his katana, mowing down soldiers. But when they both clashed with the King and Han in the middle, the elf king was having a harder time than he had with the soldiers. Slowly the elves pushed the soldiers back some, but that didn't last long for the elf king was killed by Han, and when the elf King fell the elves drew back while suffering heavy losses. Tom, without thinking, leapt into action. He drew Firetip and ran, sword first to the middle of battle and charged right at King Han.

But Na-koom got there first and slashed, pushing all his rage and sorrow at Han. Han blocked the blows with ease; Tom saw that Han was toying with Na-koom. "Na-koom look out!" Tom yelled, hoping Na-koom could hear him. But the little dagger that Han drew and swiftly jabbed into Na-koom's stomach was a sure sign that Na-koom had not heard him. Tom fired an orange blast at Han but the evil King blocked it with a wave of his hand. Thinking fast, Tom threw Firetip at Han and right after that fired a second orange blast. Han blocked the sword but the magic hit his face and he fell over backward, dead.

Everyone froze; the King was dead. The soldiers stared at Tom and tnen they cheered, waving their swords in the air and taking off armor. Elf and man alike patted Tom on the back and thanked him, but Tom looked at Na-koom. He had a smile on his face but he was already dead. Tom guessed that he had seen Han die but died after. Seven oak trees burst into flames about ten yards away from where they were standing.

After the fire had died down Tom approached ever so slightly. About five steps away from the ashes, seven figures draped in white rose from the ashes and turned to Tom. They said, "We'll heal your friend little hero." With that they turned and raised their hands and healed Na-koom. As Na-koom got up the white figures introduced themselves as the seven warlock lords. They explained that "King" Han had trapped them in the oak trees, and crowned himself "King" and they all did not have names but were just called "The Seven Warlocks".

As the Seven Warlocks flew off, Tom and Na-koom embraced and looked forward to long happy lives, but life had other plans.
