An Adventure

by Joseph Schillinger

Since Tyler loved pirates and the ships they sailed, he was overly excited to move by the ocean again. "The Flying Dutchmen" was one of his all time favorite ships. Just after they moved, they heard reports of people seeing the actual ghost ship Tyler loved. Ten miles away there was a wharf where the ship had been sighted. When it was seen, it was only visible during the night time and late evening. Laughing, moans, music, and even singing could be heard.

At 9:00 o'clock, in the evening, Tyler was in his grandfather's study looking for theold book he had found, but lost, when the cook sounded that dinner was on. He was just walking out of the room when he saw the old tattered, dirty book under a pile of English books. Tyler quickly picked it up and put it in his shirt and went down to dinner. After eating with his parents he asked if he could go outside and play for awhile. His parents said, "Yes" but only Tyler knew what he was going to really do. As Tyler walked out the door he heard something in the bush. He went over to the side of the house and looked around, but before he knew what what had happened he was hit in the head from behind and slumped down in heap.

As Tyler awoke he noticed he was on a bunk bed but he didn't move. Then, a voice frombelow said, "How are ya feelin lad?" Tyler looked up and saw what he was hearing. On an old barrel sat Blackbeard the pirate in full uniform. Tyler then asked, "Was it you who hit me on the head last night?" "Yes," said Blackbeard bluntly.

Blackbeard wants to keep Tyler as ransom for extra money for the crew. After Blackbeard had hit Tyler on the head he threw him over his shoulder and carried him down to the stolen ship, "The Guellitine."

After Tyler felt a little better he ate some squid soup and seaweed bread. He almost became sick over it, too. Blackbeard showed him where everything was because he was setting sail to the Carribean Sea to an underwater cave.

Tyler knew from the beginning that Blackbeard, as Tyler called him, was being nice to him so he would not want to run away. One day while Tyler was day dreaming, Blackbeard came up to him and asked him if he wanted his sword. Tyler said, "yeah, I should have gotten my belongings four days ago." "Well, since you have no choice, you become one of us, and we will put a dragon down the side of your neck, since you can spit words like fire. Then, we will pierce your ears and put gold earrings in them and you will get your own musket. "Is that clear?" asked Blackbeard. Tyler, known to be smart with people said, "Clear as mud!"

When Tyler was finished with the horror, he said, "What are you going to put me through next?" "You should bathe in the ocean and go to bed," said Blackbeard. "I think I shall do that, Captain!" Tyler said sarcastically. Blackbeard noticed that Tyler was being smart with him and slapped him on the face with the tip of his sword. Tyler pulled out his musket and shot Blackbeard in the chest. Blackbeard laughed at Tyler and said, "You can"t kill me or my crew or Dav--. Blackbeard cut it short. Tyler heard the word Davy. He knew something was up and asked, "What does Davy Jones have to do with this?" "Nothing," said Blackbeard impatiently. Blackbeard then took Tyler and put him in a prison cell at the bottom of the ship where it was very dark. To make matters worse, Tyler became sea sick.

The night after Blackbeard put Tyler in the prison cell, in the bottom of the ship, the crew ran into a little island. Tyler was hurled against the prison door and surprisingly it swung open. Tyler thought a minute and said to himself, "Here I have been sitting in the dark and the door hasn't been locked at all. Am I stupid or what?"

Blackbeard was looking at the wreck when he caught sight of Tyler. "What are you doing up on the deck?" he asked suspiciously. Tyler answered, "Well, it looks like you forgot to lock the door!" "Oh, well, I guess I did," Blackbeard admitted.

It took two days to get the ship off the island and when they did they sailed on. Somewhere Tyler remembered that Blackbeard told Tyler before they set sail that it only takes about a month to sail across the Carribean sea to get to their underwater cave. Today was day twenty-nine.

Tyler had become Blackbeard's right hand man and Blackbeard was growing fond of him. Blackbeard assigned Tyler to be a deck hand and deck hands were suppose to mind their own business and not ask questions.

Tyler talked to Blackbeard about how much longer they would have to sail to get to the underwater cave. Blackbeard told him it would be another day or two before they reached their destination. Tyler left and retired to his cabin. The next two days were uneventful. Time passed and soon they arrived. As the look out pirate yelled, "There she is!" everyone scrambled to the deck and could see the rock sticking up in the water. Which meant the cave was below.

"Well, my crew, this is it, we wait for Davy Jones," Blackbeard said. Time passed and the days grew longer. It seemed like it was taking forever to see Davy Jones. Two years had gone by.

The crew woke up one morning startled by a boom from a cannon that seemed to be a couple of miles away. At once the crew was on deck. The sky was dark and cloudy. Tyler looked at the ship and then to Blackbeard and said, "Is that Flying Dutchman in the distance there?"

The ship looked like it was never cleaned and the sails were torn. Blackbeard said, "The ship has come back from Davy Jones' locker, it has never been cleaned and it appears the same as I saw it ten years ago." "Of course it tis,"said a husky voice. Tyler stepped back and leaned against the mast. Blackbeard said, "Show thyself so the lad will not be frightened!"

Tyler was now 15 years old, and wasn't scared of much anymore. A spooky green light suddenly appeared near Blackbeard, and soon disappeared. In it's place stood a ragged pirate." DDD-aaa-vv-yyy Jones?" Tyler stammered. Then an icy feeling came over Tyler. He felt a cold hand laid upon his shoulder. Tyler turned around, and Davy Jones was suddenly behind him. The next day, Davy cursed the "Guillotine", and everything on it with the "Black Cross". When the curse attached itself to the ship, everything became invisible.

Davy and Blackbeard talked in the captain's cabin for hours. Finally Davy burst out of the cabin, and took Tyler by the arm. Nobody "human" could see what was going on. Davy took Tyler and threw him over to his ship. After Tyler landed on a dead corpse, he asked "What was that for?". Soon Davy floated over to his ship and landed beside Tyler."Look here, Blackbeard, I changed the treasure deal, you get less loot this time." "If you want it you're way, come and get the lad." Blackbeard said wickedly,"Oh I will!" Within the first day Tyler was gone, his parents were terribly worried. They knew he was somewhat of a smart alec, and could get himself into deep trouble.

Blackbeard was in a huff when one of the hand crew said he had heard Davy talking. Davy said that he was going down to the cave to wait for Blackbeard. Blackbeard knew that Davy wouldn't fight until he saw a flash of sword.

Tyler, in the meantime, was thumbing through the pages of the book. On the next page there was a picture of a baby.

Tyler though a moment. Might this be Davy Jones? At the moment Davy burst in. It was too late to hide anything. Davy saw the book and the picture. He went over and grabbed the book. He peeked over the top of the book and asked where Tyler had gotten the book. "It was my uncle's," Tyler said shyly. "Twasn't your uncles, because I had this here book when I was fifteen years old. I lost it. This picture is of me when, well, I dunno, when this picture was taken, but I will take the book for now," Davy said.

The next day was a wicked one. Blackbeard and his crew had tried to get on the "Flying Dutchman" at five o'clock in the morning. Tyler had heard thumps on the deck above, then the clashing of steel heard.

Tyler quickly jumped out of the bed and put on his sword. He put his musket in this belt and ran out. Tyler always had wondered if the people who were cursed could kill another like himself. He tried and the first one he shot at was Blackbeard. Bang! he saw Blackbeard fall and get up again with blood running down his left leg. Tyler saw Davey almost go overboard, so he ran over to the pirate who was pushing Davy and put his sword under the pirate's chin. Tyler said to the pirate, "let go of him!" The pirate wouldn't listen so Tyler cut off his head. Davy then thanked Tyler.

Four hours went by and almost all of Blackbeard's crew were dead. he would not give up. Five days later Tyler awakened to the sound of footsteps and clashing of steel. Tyler went out to the deck and saw Blackbeard and Davy fighting each other with swords. Tyler quickly went into the cabin and came back out with his musket. He aimed at Blackbeards heart and yelled, "STOP!"

They stopped quickly and looked in Tyler's direction. Blackbeard had turned just right so Tyler took a chance and fired his musket. The bullet went straight and true to it's target. Blackbeard fell onto his knees, leaned forward and fell dead face first to the deck. That is the end of the fight between Blackbeard and Davy Jones on the deck of the "Flying Dutchman."

After Davy examined Blackbeard's body, they threw him over the side of the ship. That night, Davy told Tyler that he was taking him home. It took them four months of traveling to get there. When they got home, his parents rejoiced. Tyler called Davy to come inside but he replied, "No thanks, it's my pleasure to bring you home." Davy said, "So long, we may never meet again." As Davy was leaving he told Tyler to wait. Davy had forgotten to give him something. Davy told Tyler that he wanted to give the book to Tyler. Tyler was overjoyed! Davy vanished, never to be seen again.
