Lost on an Island

by Beth Schillinger

Elizabeth lives on a boat near the long beaches of Wake Island. The water is a lovely blue and the dolphins are plentiful. Mike is her brother and he lives with Elizabeth. Their boat is a two level fishing boat. For being twenty five years old, the boat still sailed well. They live in the early eighteen hundreds.

Elizabeth is tall and slender for being fifteen. Wavy, brown hair came down to her waist and made her look older than she was. Dark, blue eyes completed her beautiful outward appearance.

It was a beautiful May morning. The breezes that blew across the Pacific Ocean were helping Mike and Elizabeth's fishing boat sail in a favorable direction. While Elizabeth and Mike were eating breakfast, Elizabeth spotted an island. she decided to ask Mike to go ashore after breakfast.

"Sure, how about it?" he asked and prepared to anchor the boat since he had finished his meal. Mike told Elizabeth to load his guns and pack fish sandwiches for lunch. They were all excited when a problem appeared. How would they get from the boat to the island? Elizabeth then came up with what she thought was a brilliant idea.

"Mike, how about building a raft?"she asked.

"That's a great idea, Sis!" They immediately got to work on building a raft. It took three hours with wood they used that had been stored in the bottom of their boat.

They were even more excited because they were closer to the island. Twenty minutes later, the raft hit the sandy beach. They were at the island at last! Mike pulled the raft further upon the beach so it wouldn't float away. Bouncing with excitement to explore, they took off into the jungle. Being cautious, they never split up. Mike and Elizabeth walked on half of a mile into the jungle when Elizabeth saw a building in the shape of a house.

"Look, there is an old house, Mike!" she cried. "Should we check it out?" she asked.

"Yeah,let's go in," he replied

"What kind of house could this be?" she asked Mike as they went through the door.

"I think it's a beach house," Mike told her.

"I've always wanted to live in a beach house, I bet Mom and Dad would have loved this," she smiled. They liked the house after checking it all out, except for the cellar. They hadn't seen the door for that room yet.

"Should we move in?"Mike asked her.

"Yeah! I would love that!" She was happy. Beth bumped her elbow against an old doorknob, hitting her funny bone. She discovered an old door and said,

"Look, I found another door!" It goes to a cellar. Let's check it out". They were cautious about going down the stairs. It was dark in the cellar when they lit the candle lights. They could see thousands of books and looked through some of them. She found a book that was for healing and killing. Thinking she would need it, she kept it. Elizabeth found a trap door in the right corner. It was hard for her to open because she was small and she was a girl.

"Can you help me?" she asked Mike.

"What do you need help with?" he asked.

"I need help opening a trap door," Beth said. Mike came over and opened the door easily. He went down in, to look around. Elizabeth followed him. The only thing they found was skeletons with savage arrows in their chests. Beth was really scared so they left right away. They later reasoned out that the island was inhabited.

It took Elizabeth a couple of days to get over her scare. Mike automatically knew they needed to defend themselves from any visitors. Both of them came up with ideas for traps to keep the savages away from the house. Elizabeth and Mike made fall in pits with nets to catch anyones feet and they caught monkeys. They trained them to shoot pistols.

Elizabeth and Mike finally decided to prepare for the visitors. Mike was digging pits outside to catch the savages. Elizabeth was trying to catch monkeys outside on the island. Elizabeth fell from a tree while trying to catch them.

"Ahhhhhhhh," Elizabeth cried. Mike heard something but he didn't what it was. He kept working. He heard the cry, again.

"Ahhhhhhhhh," Elizabeth cried, louder. Mike went to see if that was Elizabeth.

He called, "Elizabeth, Elizabeth!" Where are you?"

"Over here by this huge palm tree!" Elizabeth yelled. Mike went over to the biggest palm tree. He saw his sister there with her leg cut up. Mike asked her what happened and she said that she had fallen from the palm tree.

"Let's go home," said Elizabeth. When they went home, Mike cleaned up Elizabeth. He put a long strip of cloth where her cut was at.

"Do you think you'll be well in a couple of days? He asked.

"Maybe," Elizabeth answered.

"Well, I better get back to work while you rest," he told her. So, Mike got back to work. Two hours later, Mike had completed digging the pits. Elazabeth caught five monkeys before she had fallen. They had five more monkeys to catch. Mike caught the other five monkeys while Elizabeth was sleeping. When Elizabeth woke up, she wanted to help but Mike wouldn't let her. Mike thought she might have a broken leg.

One week later when Elizabeth was feeling better, they could finish up preparing for the visitors. The last thing they needed to do was nets in the pits. Elizabeth thought tht would be a hard job but Mike told her that putting the nets in the pits would be the easiest job.

One night Mike heard something. It sounded like someone opening the front door. So, Mike went downstairs to see who it was. He could tell it was the savages. Mike hurried upstairs to wake up Elizabeth. He shook Elizabeth and tried to get her to wake up. He told her the savages were there. She woke up and got dressed fast. They both got their guns ready and went downstairs. Mike shot the gun twice and killed two of the twenty savages. Now there were only eighteen left to get rid of. The savages screamed and went outside of the house. All ten of the monkeys had been trained to shoot guns. The monkeys shot three more of the savages. Two of the savages fell in the pits. One savage, who was the leader, was quick enough to get out his bow and arrows. He shot Mike in the right shoulder, then, he ran off with the other twelve.

Elizabeth got Mike in the house and broke off the tip of the arrow that was in his shoulder. She took the rest of the arrow out of his shoulder. He screamed in a high pitch while Elizabeth dressed his wounds. Elizabeth asked him if he was thirsty or hungry. He said he was not but thanked her for asking. Elizabeth told him that he better get some rest. Mike replied that he would. While mike was sleeping Elizabeth was looking through some books and found a book on wound healing. She read the book and it helped her to look for signs on Mike's wound so she wouldn't know if it were healing properly. Mike was soon better again.

The savages never came back.
