Sara-beth's New Friend

by Michaella

My main characters are Sara-Beth and a girl named Singing Bird. She and Singing Bird meet each other and don't tell their families.

Singing Bird is 9 years old. She can speak English pretty good. She has one brother, Little Wolf. He is 7. Her mother, Running Deer, and her eagle. Singing Bird lives in a teepee not too far from Sara-Beth's house. Her teepee was made out of buffalo skins, with paintings on it.

Sara-Beth is 10 years old. She has 2 brothers and a sister. Jonathon is 6, David is 23 and Carrie is 1. Katherine is her mother, and Edward is her father. Sara-Beth lives on a farm. A big white farm house.

Part 2

"Sara-beth!" Katherine Sara-beth's mother called. Sara-beth was a 10 year old girl who lived in a white farmhouse not too far from the woods. She had long dark brown hair that she put in two braids. She also had blue eyes.

"Yes Mother?" Sara-beth said, entering the front porch.

"There you are! I want you to go to the river and wash Carrie's clothes for me please" said her mother. Carrie was her 1 year old sister.

"Yes Mother" said Sara-beth. "Oh and Sara-beth!"

"Yes" said Sara-beth in reply,

"When you get back your father wants you to help David plant more corn" said Katherine.

"Yes Mother" said Sara-beth on her way to the river in the woods. When she got there she saw a little rag doll sitting on a rock. She went towards it when a girl popped out.

"W-W-who are you?" said the little girl, feeling a little frightened barely knowing English.

"I am Sara-beth" Sara said not frightened at all.

"Oh, I am Singing Bird." Singing Bird was an Indian girl who had long black hair.

"Sara-beth" a call came from the distance by her mother.

"Oh, I must do the wash" Sara-beth said trying to hurry. "Where do you live?" asked Sara-beth.

"I live down little path"said Singing Bird pointing towards the little dirt path.

"Oh! I must go! Meet me tomorrow at this time right here!" said Sara-beth rapidly.

"Bye" said Singing Bird.

"Sara-beth, it does not take that long to wash clothes" said her mother.

"Sorry Mother."

The next morning Sara-beth went down to the river with clothes of course. "Hi!" said Sara-beth.

"Hi!" said Singing Bird. "Let's play dolls."

"But do you want to learn how to read first?" asked Sara-beth.

"Oh, yes!" said Singing Bird excitedly.

"O.K. repeat after me" said Sara-beth, "A-B-C-D-E-F..."

The next day they practiced more of the alphabet. Then Sara-beth asked "What is your house made of?"

"It's made of skins, why?" answered Singing Bird.

Part 3

"Look up in the sky far away!" Singing Bird looked up.

"What is that?" she asked. It was like a round, gray, twirling figure in the sky.

"It's a tornado! Please show me the way to your house!" said Sara-beth, startled. So they both rushed to Singing Bird's house. She explained to her family why they must leave their home. So they rushed to Sara-beth" house.

"Sara-beth Alice Harrison! Where have you been? There's a tornado out there! Who's with you?" asked Katherine.

"They're my friends. Let's go to the cellar now, and I'll tell you more when we get there," she said. When they arrived at the cellar, Sara-beth explained and introduced Singing Bird's family to her family. The Indian family knew much English. So they talked for awhile and before they knew it the tornado was gone.

Part 4

"Mother?" asked Sara-beth.

"Yes?" she said in reply.

"May all of us go to see if Singing Bird's house is still up?" she asked.

"Well I suppose so," said Katherine. So they all went down the little dirt path that ws now dirty. There ahead of them was the teepee torn into shreds.

"Oh my!" said Sara-beth's father. "They're going to have to stay with us until we can build a log cabin." Sara-beth wanted to jump for joy when he said this. So Singing Bird's brother Little Wolf, 7, and Jonathon (Sara-beth's 7 year old brother) got along well. Singing Bird's mother was to have a baby soon named with an American name: Sara-beth! The families lived right next to each other now. And they went to school together every day.
What would Singing Bird's family have done without Sara-beth; she was a hero!
