An Epoch In The Life Of Anne Oke

by Courtney

My story is about Anne Patricia Oke,a fourteen year old Catholic girl. She is traveling with her family to El Paso from Sante Fe in a covered wagon . It is the summer of 1870. She is about 5 foot 7 and very slender. She has light shoulder length auburn hair. Her eyes are a light gray~green colour. Everyone says she is the spitten' image of her mother.

Anne enjoys a multitude of things including singing, playing musical instruments and anything else having to do with music. Her musical talent probably started with her great~great~great grandmother, Hedwig, on her mothers side or her great~great~great grandmother Johanna, on her fathers side. As a matter of fact her whole family is very musical.

She also takes delight in teaching, dancing, reading, and playing with small children. However Anne's favorite past~time is anything having to do with animals. Her favorite type of animal is the horse. She used to have a horse named Daniel but she had to leave him behind in Sante Fe.

Anne has a very big family! First there are her parents, Caroline Marie and Cody Daniel Patrick. He is a law~enforcer traveling to El Paso to help defend the Natives against the dreaded criminal: Marcus Mitchell. Next is Anne's twin brother, Gilbert Micheal Wayne. After Gil comes Nancy Eilleen. Nan is 9 and exceedingly beautiful. Alexia Claire is next. She is 3 and usually referred to as Alex. Then there is baby Alexander James who is 1 year old.

Oh yeah, she also have 3 adopted siblings. There father {her uncle Geoff Oke} a law~enforcer as well, and their mother {her Aunt Maria} died in Sante Fe in a "shoot out" caused by Marcus. Anthony Matthew {Matt} is the eldest and married to Laurie Katherine. They have 2 kids, a charming young boy, Kenneth William {Ken or Kenny} who is 4 and Jennifer Elizabeth who is a very adorable 2 year old. Ariel Megan Richelle is next at 18. She is a tomboy and reffered to as Richelle. She has 2 dogs, Napoleon and Sabastian. After Richelle is Eric Jonathan Walter who is 16.

Paiute Indian Kevin Growling Cougar is another main character. Kevin is 14 and 1/2 native american and 1/2 "white" because when his mother was 13 she was found {and raised} by an Native lady after her family and friends died of Typhoid Fever. She then grew up and married Kevin's father.

Kevin is nearly 6 feet tall and rather thin. He has midnight black hair and deep sapphire blue eyes. He enjoys hunting, nature, spending time with family and friends and riding his horse, Heartbeat.

Just like Anne, Kevin comes from a large family. His father is a hunter named Flying Horse. His mother is named Rebekah Samantha but her native american name {to be used in public} is Singing Bird. Kevin has 4 brothers, first there is Justin Shawn~ Dusty Trail who is 12, Jason Gregory~Barking Dog is 10. The 2 babies are David Benjamin~Raining Cloud who is 2 and Aaron Robin~Wolf Cub who is 6mos. He also has 5 sisters the eldest of which is Marjorie Virginia~ Blooming Rose who is 18 and engaged to Roving Bear. Caroline Marie~Tulip Rose is 16 and Stephanie Colleen~Rosetta is 8. The youngest 2 girls are Laura Paige~Maple Rose who is 6 and Rachel Kateri~Raining Rose who is 4.

The Indian village and surroundings is where most of the story takes place however the beggining takes place on the trail and in the wagon.

Part 2

Today I Mother made me this diary. She said I should write about my days so here goes!

Wednesday, August 4th 1870

Today Richelle was out fetching wood for the fire when she noticed something, two young deer nudging at the body of what appeared to be their dead mother. Feeling sorry for them she picked them up (with much trouble) and put them in her basket. When she got to the wagons she realized that our parents would not let her keep them so she sneaked them into the wagon in which Matt, Laurie, Kenny, Jenny, Richelle and I were riding in. She quickly, but gently, put them into her trunk, slightly propped it open and then ran to give mother the wood. She then motioned for me to sneak away. When we both got to the wagon she showed me the deer {after making me promise not to tell}. "Oh they are so cute",I exclaimed, "What are their names""Well," she said, "I was hoping that you could help me name them. Would you, please""Well,"I said,"sure! Um,",I said thinking for a moment"What about naming the darker one Jebediah and you can call him Jeb. And naming the lighter one India after your best friend in Sante Fe?""Those are great names!"she exclaimed happily,"Come on, lets go get some supper and remember you promised not to tell!

Thursday, August 5th 1870

Dear Diary,

"Today when Richelle was secretly trying to feed the deer some milk Mother walked in! "Whatever are you doing?",she cried,"where did these animals come from? How long have they been here? WHY are the here?" "Well", Richelle said calmly,"I am feeding baby deer, they came from the forest, they have been here since yesterday morning and I brought them here because their mother was dead and they have no one to take care of them. Can we keep them? Please?" she said not so calmly. "Well," mother said, "if it is okay with your father then it is okay with me. On three conditions. First of all, you feed them from you food portions unless other food is offered. Second, is that it is your responsibility. And third, You give them good names! Now have you named them and if you have what are their names?" "Well I named them",Richelle started,"I mean Anne named them Jeb and India. Oh and thank you Mother!"And with that she ran out to ask pa and he said Yes! So now two more animals were added to our daily routine.

Monday,August 23 1870

Dear Diary,

Sorry I haven't written I have been sick with horrible headaches and such!

GUESS WHAT! Today pa shouted to us, "Hey everyone make sure you are all tidied because we are about 1/4 mile from the village." We all hurried to straighten ourselves up before presenting ourselves to the Natives. I put on my pale green and blue checked gingham dress. I braided my hair in three braids and cris-crossed them over my head. I also put on my shoes and new stockings. I also grabbed my new pale blue shawl and my green and blue checked handbag. As we entered the town most of the people were excited and threw their hats and such in the air!

The town was a very small town with a trading centre, a worshipping centre and a schoolhouse. The schoolhouse was empty because there was no one to teach the children, however, I intended to change that! Any way that was all that was in the village. On the outskirts however there were several teepees and long houses. In the middle was a large patch of land. Towards the middle of this land there was a large construction, I later learned that this was for our temporary living quarters.

Now here I am stepping out of the wagon. Seeing a white face amongst the many dark-toned faces immediately surprises me. She introduced herself as Rebekah Samantha ~ Singing Bird. She then introduced some of the main people of the village, her husband and her 10 children.

She also introduced her eldest's fiancée. Who's wedding is going to be in about two weeks time. She has a young son named Kevin and this is what I learned about them. Kevin is 14 and 1/2 native American and 1/2 "white" because when his mother was13 she was found {and raised} by an Native lady after her family and friends died of Typhoid Fever.

Kevin has 4 brothers, first there is Justin Shawn ~ Dusty Trail who is 12, Jason Gregory ~ Barking Dog is 10. The 2 babies are David Benjamin ~ Raining Cloud who is 2 and Aaron Robin ~ Wolf Cub who is 6mos. He also has 5 sisters the eldest of which is Marjorie Virginia ~ Blooming Rose who is 18 and engaged to Roving Bear. Caroline Marie ~Tulip Rose is 16 and Stephanie Colleen ~Rosetta is 8. The youngest 2 girls are Laura Paige ~ Maple Rose who is 6 and Rachel Kateri ~ Raining Rose who is 4.

Friday, September 6th 1870,

Dear Diary,

Tonight we are going to Blooming Rose's wedding. As we arrived there Rebekah raced out. " Oh! Oh!", She cried, "I am so nervous!" "That is okay", Mother said, "I know how you feel! I felt that way when Matt and Laurie were married. Just sit down and take a couple deep breaths." About five minutes later Blooming Rose and Roving Bear were wed! It was so lovely a ceremony that I could not began to describe it! If I did I might ruin the gorgeous image so I will not even try. I will however tell you that Rebekah's son Kevin is a horrible person! He blamed me for spilling his drink on his clothes! He is the one who did it! We then started arguing and I got in trouble! I am going to try and avoid him as much as possible!

Monday, September 9th 1870

Dear Diary,

Today I went to see the Chief, Chief Big Buffallo, about the schoolhouse. I took Rebekah's daughter Caroline ( Tulip Rose )with me to translate for me. I told him that I would be happy to teach (with Caroline's help ) the children of the tribe English as well as the legands of the tribe, and about the territory and anything else that he would like them to be taught! He said he would think about it since it seemed to meen so much to me, although he thought that the children could learn most of these things from their parents and they did not really need to know English! Carrie ( she said I could call her that in private ) said I was lucky that he was in such a good mood because when he is in a bad mood he just sits and sulks!

Friday, September 13th 1870

Dear Diary,

Guess What! First of all the chief consented to letting me TRY teaching at the schoolhouse for a bit. And second, today and indian scout spotted 30 or more men heading this way about 5 miles outside of the town. When father heard this news he went and looked for hiself. When he returned he told us that it seemed that Marcus Mitchel was almost here with 40 other men! Most of the women and children were sent deep into the woods with tents to stay untill Marcus left! However my whole family and Carrie's family stayed behind!

Saturday, September 14th 1870

Dear Diary,

Just a quick note. Marcus is 1/2 mile out of town!!

Part 3

Sunday, September 15 1870

Dear Diary,

Today Marcus and his gang rode into town shooting at anything that moved! After he had been in town for about 2min.Marcus rode his stallion out to the center of the town. All of the men and boy folk in the town, as well as Ma, Rebekah and I ( I insisted that I be allowed to help), were hiding in the trees (dressed up in costumes made out of tree branches so as not to be spotted) waiting for just the right time to attack.

"Chief", Marcus shouted," I know you are here somewhere! Come out! There were some rumors goin' betwixt me men that Cody Oke might be with ye. If he is I wanna see 'im to!"

And then he did something awful! He spit! Right there in the middle of town! It was awful! But I knew I would have to face things much worse then that ( such as gore ) if this battle got as bad as it could, so I just let that awful moment slip right out the side of my head.

We waited about 5min. and then we began the attack! The village warriors began shooting at "The Double M Gang" (that is what I have decided to refer to them as from now on), some with bows and arrows and some with the guns my father brought out here with us. We watched as many of the Double M men fell to the ground. Then we rushed at them. Marcus retreated his men but vowed he would be back in the morning.

Marcus had about 19 of his men wounded and one dead. While we had only Roving Bear, who got shot in the arm but should be okay (much to Marjorie's relief) and Squa-Squo (a warrior) who lost his left leg. It was awful but Mother said we should just thank the Lord that we did not lose any lives!

I must go get as much sleep as possible so I can still help in the morning.

Oh Yeah, Mother, Rebekah and I have not only have to tend to the wounded, and shoot at the men but we also have to help prepare the dead bodies for burial!

Monday, September 16 1870

Dear Diary,

WE WON!! WE WON!! We beat the Double M Gang! AND captured Marcus!! Here is what happened.

I awoke this morning to the sound of a gunshot! It was the guard, Paso Waso. It was the "Marcus is coming get your guns ready" signal. As we hurried to get up and grab our guns the Double M Gang rode back into town.

I ran out to my battle station and waited for the horn signaling the start of this second day's battle. Doot- doodle-loot-didle-loot, sounded the horn and I began shooting! I actually hit a man! I feel so terrible but I know that I have helped save these people.

After about 3 hours of shooting, Marcus fell down, struck by a bullet from my father's gun. When his men saw this they all ran out of town because they had lost their great leader as well as more then 3/4 of their people and were now scared out of their wits! Anyway, Father, the Chief and Climbing Cougar, one of the Paiute's best warriors, ran out to grab him. When they neared him he slowly raised his gun-hand and then BANG! BANG! BANG! three shots were fired and the three men fell to the ground. Marcus also slumped into a deep sleep. Mother, Rebekah and I rushed out to help Father and Climbing Cougar, and the Chief, while the men ran to get Marcus.

When we arrived at their sides we found both Father ( who had been shot in the leg) and the Chief (shot in the arm) still breathing. Clinbing Cougar did not share in their good luck; Marcus's bullet went straight through his heart!

I must go help tend to Father and the Chief now.

Tuesday, September 17 1870,

Dear Diary,

This has been an excellent day! All the woman and children returned to the village today. Also, the Chief is will be okay in about four weeks as he suffered only a mild shot. Father however will be paralyzed in his left leg! He probably won't be able to continue his job so he has decided to stay here is El Paso as their permanent law enforcer!

Besides Father and the Chief, Matt and Kevin were also slightly wounded. As I helped tend to Kevin's wounded arm I got to talk to him about many things. He really is not so bad after all! And he is even kind-of cute. Maybe we will become friends after all!

Wednesday, September 18th 1870

Dear Diary

Today the wagon came bringing Napoleon and Sabastian out to Richelle. The driver was Nick O'Brian, a good friend of Fathers ( he is like an Uncle to us) as well as another Law Enforcer. Father decided to send Marcus back to Sante Fe with Nick. There he will under-go trial and then hang! Mother is calling me, I must go!

Thursday, September 19th 1870

Dear Diary,

Just a quick note. Today Nick left for Sante Fe with Marcus. Nick was kind enough to offer to take a letter to Danny back for me! Mother would not let me see them off for she said I should not be hearing the language that Marcus was yelling as they drove past! Nick O'Brian said he would try to visit us this summer. I now have to go help mother again. I will try to write more tomarrow!

Part 4

Friday, September 27th 1870

Today Gil and I went for a walk with Kevin. He is a very enjoyable young man. It started out being just a pleasant stroll through a forest trail but after awhile Kevin and Gil started getting restless.

Then as we sauntered past a berry bush they seemed to "disappear". When I turned around to see where they went I got pummelled with pinecones and a few berries. I shrieked with both surprise and enjoyment. I then raced around (still being pummelled with cones) picking up cones and berries to throw back at them. When the fight finally ended (I think I might have lost but it was very hard to tell) we headed back toward camp. Our mothers were having tea at Kevin's "house" so we decided to sneak over to my house because we knew that if our mothers saw us looking as we did we would be in for BIG trouble. As we entered our house we had a big surprise

"OH MY GOODNESS! What Happened to you guys?" our mothers yelled.

"Well", I said, "we kind-of got into a little berry war. That's all."

"Go clean up immediately" they both cried.

Then they started laughing as though it was funny!

"What is so funny", asked Gil, " Why are you laughing?"

"Just look at the three of you" laughed Rebekah. We turned to really take a good look at each other, and then we too started laughing. Our hair was a mess, mine especially, it was full of little pinecone chips and sticking together because of the berries. Our clothes were in ruins! They looked as though we had left them out in the mud for a fortnight! Our arms and hands were caked in a thick layer of mud and berry juice! As we ran to get cleaned up, Kevin asked me to meet him at the large pine tree on the outskirts of the village.

I dressed in a pale, green, cotton summer dress. It is my second best dress. I pulled my hair back in two braids and folded them over the top of my head. I was surprised at myself! Why I thought, did I get all dressed up for Kevin? I didn't like him at all, did I? Maybe I did like him. Oh why did everything have to be so complicated? Mother just told me that I have to put out my lamp now and go to bed. I will tell you about the rest of my day later.

Saturday, September 28th 2870

Yesterday when I arrived at the pine Kevin said he wanted to talk to me.

"Anne" he said, " I was wondering if you, well, you know. Well do you think that you might be interested in well getting married? He said this very fast and nearly knocked me off my feet with the question. "

Well" I replied, "I will have to think about it". I must have sounded rather dumb. I know my cheeks must have turned bright red."I will have to discuss it with my mother and all. My parents got married just after they turned 16 and I will be 15 in two weeks", I said. I was surprised at how calm I sounded. I wanted to jump up and down! I realised when he asked me that I really did love him.

"I must go now", he said "bye". Then just before he ran off he gave a quick kiss on my cheek. I must go now and think about it, I have decided to ask mother and father tonight.

Saturday, October 3rd 1870

GUESS WHAT! I am going to be married! I shall explain! Last Sunday night I told Mother and Father what Kevin had asked me, they sat their silent at first. I was afraid that they would refuse me. Then came their reply, YES. Just like that. I am SO happy! Also Eric has asked Carrie to marry HIM! We are going to have double wedding on November 9th! I can't wait! I have to go now fore it 'tis dinnertime. I will not be able to write as often because I need to get ready for the weddings.

Tuesday, October 13th 1870~ My 15th birthday

Today I was awaken by the sounds of both my family and Kevin's family having a conversation. When I walked out of the room that I share with Richelle and Nan they all stopped talking. It was almost as though they did not want me knowing what they were talking about.

"Happy Birthday Anne" said my mother "I have invited Rebekah's family over for you birthday breakfast. I hope that is okay with you."

"Sure, it is fine with me" I said.

"Happy Birthday Anne" Kevin said quietly. I have noticed that since he proposed we have both been acting extremely shy around each other. Then we all sat down to eat breakfast. It consisted of scrambled eggs and berry pie (made from the last few berries of the year). This was our traditional birthday breakfast.

After we ate I helped Mother and Rebekah with the dishes. Then I went for a walk with Kevin down the trail, which was the "entrance" to the village. We had been walking for about 15 minutes when I noticed a wagon sitting along the side of the trail. As we approached it I heard a baby crying. We opened the back flap and saw a sick woman lying on top of an old and dirty blanket. Lying next to her were two young babies.

"Hello, ach ach" said the woman as she began to cough.

" What happened? Who are you?" I asked.

"I am Fiona, ach ach, O'Riley." She said. "My husband was a partner of that awful Marcus Mitchell. ACH ACH. He dragged my two month old babies and me out here, Riley Michael and Ryan Gregory, so he could help Marcus in this here battle. Well he was killed. Now I am dying and my babies are going to, ach ach, be left alone. I know I don't know you, but you seem like a nice young girl. Please, would you take my boys? They will need a home after I, ach ach, die.

"Kevin, what do you think, could we take the boys? Please!" I begged.

"I suppose you could, as long as you know how much of a responsibility they will be. "He replied.

Then I turned back to the dying young lady. " Mrs. O'Riley," I started, " I, We would be very happy to adopt your boys. Now we are going to take you into the OH My Oh No, Oh Kevin!"

I wailed because as I was saying this Fiona O'Riley laid her head down and died! Kevin then told me to get into the wagon and tend to the boys. He then got up onto the front of the wagon, lifted the reins and drove the horses into town. When we arrived everyone got very excited and started asking questions. I tried to tell everyone that the boys were hungry, tired, needed tending to and I would answer all of their questions later. No one listened however so I left Kevin outside to deal with the crowd. It is getting late and Riley is beginning to cry for some milk.

Before I go I would like to say that I have had the best birthday of my life. I got some things for the home I will have after Kevin and I are married, from my family. And from Kevin's family I got a light brown horse named Mystery. From Kevin I got a beautiful necklace and bracelet that originally belonged to his mother's mother and was given to him to give to his bride-to-be. These were all great things but my best gift was Riley and Ryan. I will never forget this birthday because of them.

Thursday, October 29th 1870

I am sorry that I have not written for awhile but with the boys and the wedding preparations I have been to busy for much of anything! I have finished my wedding dress. It is made of a pale white silk that Mother brought out for occasions like these. It has a long train and veil. I is just full of little tucks and such! It is gorgeous! Mother and Rebekah have finished Alexia and Rachel's dresses. They are made out of a pale blue fabric. Alex and Rachel are going to be our flower girls. Now Mother and Rebekah are helping Laura, Nan and Stephanie make their dresses. They are going to be the bridesmaids. My Maid of Honour is Richelle and Carrie's is her "kindred spirit" Morning Dove. Richelle is making her dress out of a pale green silk. While Morning is making hers out of a fresh deerskin which she has dyed green. They all look very lovely.

The boys are all wearing their best suits. Gilbert is going to be Eric's Best-Man while Kevin's is going to be his best friend Soaring Eagle. Jason, Justin and Nick O'Brian (he arrived here yesterday for the wedding) are going to be the "Men of Honour".

And Last, but not least, Jenny and Kenny are going to be the ring bearers! Mother had Nick bring out three rings. The first one has a ring of pearls with a diamond in the centre. It is very elegant looking. The second and the third look exactly the same. The both have a gold band with tiny etchings of feathers and such all around. Nick said something about Father's friend Sam Carter had them made in his shop.

Sunday, November 8th 1870,

Today it is Riley and Ryan's 5-month birthday. They are so cute! They can roll over, crawl (sort-of) and are trying to talk! They are extremely cute. They have blonde hair with some strikes of brown here and there. They have bluish eyes. They are very adorable. Jenny is particularly excited about her baby cousins.Alexander and Zachary Aaron love rolling around with their nephews (who are about the same age)

Tomorrow is the wedding. I am surprised how calm I am on the outside. On the inside I am just as excited as Carrie who just went for a walk is because she can not sit still. She keeps running from our house, to see Eric and Richelle, and her house to talk with her mother. Finally Eric convinced her to go for a walk to the small pond about 1/4 mile outside of town. Kevin and Eric don't seem to be effected very much by the fact that they will soon be married.I have to go Ryan is trying to "help" Mother with the cooking and is getting in the way.

Monday, November 9th 1870

I AM MARRIED!!!! Oh everything went wonderful at the wedding. Now here I am at our new home. It is very late so Kevin has gone to bed and Riley and Ryan are sleeping in their new cradles in their new bedroom. Carrie and Eric are going to live with Mother and Father for now because they are soon going to move back East so Eric can go to medical school.

Also, Marjorie is pregnant. She has known for about 1 month. She expects it around June 29th. They have already decided on names. If it is a girl it is going to be Rebekah Ponie and if it is a boy it will be Cody Deer. Everyone is very happy for them. This will be Rebekah's first grandchild. She can't wait.

Wednesday, November 11th 1870

Being a mother, wife and "maid" to your family is extremely hard! I am busy every hour of they day. Either I am tending to the boys or cooking dinner or cleaning house, there always something that needs tending to. I finally got a chance to have Carrie and Richelle over for some tea today. It was so nice to be able to just sit back and talk with girls my own age! That is until Riley and Ryan discovered my sewing box. Riley ended up pocking his hand with a needle and Ryan scraped his hand on my scissors. I thought I had them hidden well enough but I guess they are just smarter then I think.

I am beginning to run out of pages so I guess that this is the end of my first diary. I think that I will probably be to busy from now on to write so I will now make a new one however one day, if I ever have a little girl, then maybe I can make her a diary to express her thoughts in.

Now Kevin wants to put in a small note so I will say Good-Bye. You have been a wonderful diary. Thank-you

~ Anne Patricia (Oke) O'Gill (Kevin took on his mother's maiden name so that we might be able to have a last name!)

I just wanted to say that I have a wonderful wife! And two wonderful boys and I am the luckiest man alive!!

Kevin Flying Horse O'Gill

Epilogue

Anne and Kevin lived in the Indian village for 25 years. In 1896 (a year after the O'Gills moved away) both Anne and Kevin's parents died of a small pox epidemic which nearly wiped out the whole village! Anne and Kevin continued to adopt children who had lost their parents.

By the time they left the village they had adopted 11 young children (including Riley and Ryan), and had nine. Two of the girls, Shannon Tracy and Katherine "Kati" Rose, and two of the boys, Andrew "Andy" Martin and Joseph "Joey" Louis, died of childhood illnesses. And Jackson "Jack" Raye was left blind after getting in a fight with another young boy and got pocked in the eye. Elizabeth "Betty" Louise, Valerie "Val" Martina, Courtnee Kaylie and Mellissa "Millie" Caroline all got the German measles, where from they never found out.

When they left the village to move back to Anne's home old home in Sante Fe their three eldest children, Riley, Ryan and their daughter Fiona "Fi or Fiona" Caoilfhionn (pronounced kwee-lyn), decided to move out to Boston to live with their Aunt Carrie and Uncle Eric. By now they had four children, Caroline Marie, Eric Jonathan, Rebekah Marguerite and Seth Patrick.

In Sante Fe Anne and Kevin adopted five more children and had a set of twins. This brought their total of kids living at home to 22. Soon however Betty, Val, Courtnee, Liesl Anne, Nicholas "Nick" Gregory and Brian Michael moved out. The boys (who were twins and did everything together) went east to go to college to try to become teachers. Betty and Val opened up the little schoolhouse in Sante Fe and shared the teacherage together. Courtnee went back to the Indian village, and Liesl got married to a young lawyer named Charlie Peters.

After living in Sante Fe for four years tragedy struck again. Daniel "Dan" Benjamin, Christopher "Chris" David, Hedwig Maria and Jessika "Jessie" Lacy all caught scarlet fever and died within a week. As if that was not enough their two youngest boys (twins also) Jamie Lee and Tyler Brooks caught the fever in their ears leaving them both deaf! However they survived and Anne and Kevin were both very thankful. This left Jack, Jamie and Tyler with disabilities.

Their remaining children grew up and became very trustworthy people. Their sons Erik Matthew, Kyle Joseph along with their sister Erin Lynn opened the first real Law building in El Paso. It was called The Oke and O'Gill's Law Office. To commemorate the hard work that both the Okes and the O'Gills did to help bring law to El Paso.

Their three remaining children got married and settled down in Sante Fe. Richelle Marie (named after Anne's sister and friend) married Brian Williams. And Elaina Siofra (pronounced shee-fra) married Aaron Secrot and together started a children's orphanage. Johanna Eliza married Jason Doringer.

Kevin died in 1915 at the age of 60 as a result of a heart attack. Six months later a week after her 60th birthday Anne died of a stroke.

As for Kevin's family, they all moved out East a few months before the epidemic hit the village. Marjorie and Roving Bear had three children. The one that they announced that they were expecting on the day of Anne, Kevin, Carrie and Eric's wedding was a girl. They named her Rebekah Ponie. Two years later they had a little boy they named Cody Wolf. They also had another little girl named Megan Cherie, but she died of whooping cough when she was six months old. His little brother Zachary Aaron was one of the first men to survive a plane crash during World War One.

Anne's sister Richelle stayed in El Paso for two years after Anne and Kevin left when the epidemic hit, she was lucky enough NOT to catch it. Instead she spent that time tending to the sick, she was able to help save twenty young people. After the epidemic she went and visited Anne and Kevin then left to try her hand at traveling, she wanted to become a Federal Agent for the U.S. however she was not allowed because she was a woman. This made her very mad so she decided that she would be a "undercover", "unknown" lookout for the law enforcers out west. She would travel around throughout the different towns and if she spotted any wrong-doingas then she would notify the law-enforcers in some weird way. Once she sent a dog puppy to one of the law-enforcers main buildings. The dog had on his collar the name of the town as well as the type of problem in that town. No one, except for Anne and Kevin ever knew that Richelle was the one who sent these mysterious notes.

Her brother Matt, his wife Laurie and their two children moved to Sante Fe a year after Anne and Kevin did. They lived here for the rest of their lives. Gilbert married Alexandra de Lavana a Spanish teacher. They too moved to Sante Fe with Anne and her family. They had two little children. Ren Anne and Gilbert Alexander. Alexander married Kevin's sister Rachel and they moved to Oklahoma. Alexia and Nancy have a double wedding as well. They married Kevin's other brothers Justin and David. Who would have thought that from this tree of trouble could bloom such beautiful blossoms.
