Washington D.C. 1865

by Clairessa

Hi. My name is Hannah Jefferson. I live with my mother, father, and little brother, Roy. I am 12 years old. This is the year 1865.

I was born in Virginia where my Aunt Anna and Uncle Paul and most of my relatives live. When I was 5 years old, we moved here to Washington D.C. My father is a doctor and helps poor people in our area. Someday I would like to help people also.

Part 2

This summer we went back to Virginia to visit Aunt Anna, Uncle Paul and our cousins. This was the first time we met our cousins, Mary, John, and Danny. John and Danny went off to play with Roy. Mary and I went to the woods to pick berries. It was fun just talking and joking with her. When Mary was on one side of the huge blackberry bush, I suddenly heard a noise on my side of the bush. A bear came out of the bush and started to chase me! As I ran, I tripped over a log and my head hit something hard. When I woke up, I found that I lost.

Part 3

I got up and wandered around a while. Suddenly, I came upon a tent, or at least what looked like a tent. A girl about my age walked out of the tent. She was an Indian! I was terrified, because I had heard many bad things about Indians. She too seemed just as terrified. So, I decided to introduce myself. I told her my name was Hannah and she told me that her name was Sky Dove. She told me she had wandered off the hunting path and had gotten lost. Because we were both lost, we decided to help each other to find our way back home. But first, we needed some food because we were both very hungry!

Sky Dove showed me how to capture a small creature using a trap made of sticks, branches, and leaves. Later, when Sky Dove and I were cooking our meal, we heard noises that sounded like people yelling. At first we were frightened. But then Sky Dove recognized their voices. It was Sky Dove's family! She ran to hug her mother and tell her family about me. Then they offered to help me find my way back to my aunt's house.

We all walked for a long time. It was getting late, but I could smell the smoke from a fire. I could also hear my brother, Roy and my cousin, Mary calling my name. I knew I was back to my aunt's house at last!

Part 4

I was so glad to see my family again. We had a great meal together and I talked about my adventure.
The next morning after Roy and I packed, we said good-bye and rode away with our parents.
