The Time of Umfa-Umfa, and How He Lived

by Alanna-Marie

It is the year 6000 B.C.

Umfa Umfa is only twelve years old, and is quite strong. He can hunt, gather many fruits, and catch fish. He has short, scraggly hair and hazel eyes that are gentle. He wears a bears fuzzy fur.

He has a sister named rose, who is thirteen years old. She has long, long dark brown hair. She has blue eyes. She wears bear fur, just like her brother. His mother has hair down to her shoulders. She has to keep cutting it whith a sharp piece of bronze. His father has long hair. He is almost always gone hunting and fishing.

Umfa Umfa lives in the deep forest, where it is cool and dark. Flowers surround the cave. The pond is just beyond, so they do not have to walk far for water. Food is out in the forest, right where they are!

Part 2

Umfa Umfa went into his family's cave. He saw his mother who was molding a bowl out of mud. She had his sister with her, and he saw she was teaching her how to mold one too. His sister was grumbling happily. She smiled at the odd shaped bowl she had made. Her mother clapped her hands as to get her attension. She looked up and frowned slightly, but begin molding again. Just then, Umfa Umfa's Father stomped in. He grunted at Umfa Umfa, and waved his hand at the cave entrance. Umfa Umfa's hunting lesson was that day. Umfa Umfa got up, disappointed, for his little cave corner was comfortable. "Come on! his Father seemed to say in his grunts. They left for the forest. Suddenly, a sound came from a bush. Umfa Umfa looked, and saw it was only a mouse. He pulled a berry off the bush, and sniffed it. He plopped it in his mouth carelessly and sucked on it. It was really sour. He loved sour things. His father pressed a finger to his lips. He circled around and looked up. Nothing.Grunting, he told Umfa Umfa to follow him. He lead him to a dark area, where no sun shone.Lifting his spear in the air, he charged out of sight. Umfa Umfa looked around for something to hunt himself. He spotted some bark on the ground, and, pretending it was a saber tooth, he ran forward and stabbed it. He found out it was wet, because it broke as soon as his blade touched it. He bent down and picked it up. He ran his fingers down it and put it to his nose. It smelled wonderfully like rain water with flowers mixed in. Smelling it made him feel kind of happy. Stroking it like you would a pet, he ran to find his Father. He looked and looked. Starting to get tired, he looked for a place to rest. On the way, he saw a spider. He ran! I'll mention he was very scared of them.

Part 3

Umfa Umfa was tired. So he went to find a place to rest. He found a dry brown slope of parched grass. His eyes where blury, he was so tired. He lay down. It was soft and fuzzy, and a little uncomfortable. Just as he was dozing off, the slope began to shake. He thought it was him, dreaming. He shifted and started resting again. He fell asleep. He was awakened by himself shaking violently. He was being thumped about so much that he clung on to what he thought was grass; But he was wrong! He saw long, musty white tusks, and a large, hairy trunk which lifted and made a terrific sound. Umfa Umfa opened his mouth in fright. He looked below at the ground, twenty feet down from him.. He clambered up higher and higher and held the wolly mamoths fur in a tight clutch. It would have looked very comical, seeing him riding on that huge creature, but for him, it wouldn't be nearly as funny. Obviously, the mammoth knew something was clinging on to itself, and did not like it; it was trying hard to get him off. Umfa Umfa looked down and saw a large spider on the mamoths leg. It looked harmless, but still, he yelled in more fright as it crawled up to him.

Now he was hanging off the side of the mamoth, trying to get away from the spider. He turned his head and saw a bush that looked sturdy and soft. He jumped off, closing his eyes, hoping, hoping, that he would land in it. He did, but he had no idea that it was full of hundreds of little needles. He got up, all sore, and walked home. He ate dinner, tried to tell his family what happened, but whatever he said they looked at him as if he was crazy. So, after dinner, he lay down and slept, long and hard.

Part 4

Umfa Umfa woke up to an empty cave. No one was there at all but the bats, and oddly, someone had swept out the spider webs, as if for him. A noise came from an under bush, and his sister Rose walked in. She stared blankly at her brother, who was settling down to sleep again. As Rose walked out of the cave, Umfa Umfa was sure he heard her grumble: "Lazy." Now, Umfa Umfa was looking in the cave for, well, of course, as you know, a soft warm bed that his sister may have perpared for him, but he was sure that she had not, so anyhow he went in, and there was a bed she had done for him, so, of course, well, you know what he did then; He SLEPT.
